Chapter Ten
âYouâre awfully quiet this morning,â Mike said.
Jordan chewed her bite of breakfast taco, then met her brotherâs gaze. âI have a lot on my mind.â
âWant to talk?â
Did she? Sheâd managed to evade diving into the subject of her misery yesterday with Declan. Jordan didnât know if heâd even realized that. But the idea of telling her brother, while having a comfort level of knowing each other a long time, also gave her a sense of shame.
âIâm not sure.â
Michael peered over his coffee cup as he took a sip. âYou know I wouldnât judge you, right, Jay?â
Do I? âYou may not mean to, but you might.â
Her brother studied her. âI hate that youâre probably right. I really need to work on that.â
âI know you better than you know yourself.â She chuckled but it was forced.
âYou have to admit, Iâm good at repenting and making up for my gross misjudgments.â
Jordan laughed. At Christmastime, he and Vivian had had a falling-out, mostly Michaelâs fault. To make it up to her, heâd taken her on a carriage ride. Theyâd been together ever since.
âIt did work out, so...â She shrugged.
His lips curved as a faraway look filled his eyes. âIâm so thankful for Vivian.â He focused on Jordan. âBut Iâm also thankful for you. I love you, Pip and Chuck. I want you to know Iâm always here for you. It guts me that you felt like you couldnât share your accomplishments.â
âI didnât want to fail you.â
Mike groaned, dropping his head, his voice low. âIâm not Pop.â
âI know that.â
âDo you?â His head rose and his gaze met hers. âDo you know you canât fail me? Iâm not your father. Iâm not your child. Iâm your brother. Iâll love you no matter what. I donât have some kind of test for you to pass or fail.â
Jordanâs eyes watered. âYeah, but it took me forever to get a degree, and you had one by the time you were twenty-two.â
âAre you dead?â
She jolted. âNo.â What was he getting at?
âThen it didnât take you forever.â A smug smile turned up his lips.
So, maybe that had been an exaggeration. Still... âI want you to be proud of me.â
âOf course I am. Youâre talented, kind and my sister. Why wouldnât I be proud?â
âThen why wonât you let me change the general store around? Why donât you trust me?â The words tore from her throat.
Once again, she found herself in a situation where she wanted to grab the words and stuff them right back in the part of her that stewed over them, examined them over and over until her mind was exhausted. Once her thoughts became voiced, she no longer had control. Now sheâd have no choice but to wait and hear what Michael thought. The time of creating different scenarios in her head was over.
Her stomach churned up acid.
âIs that what you think?â Michael sank back into his chair.
Might as well be honest now. She nodded, holding her breath.
Michael rubbed his beard. âI must be a terrible big brother for you to believe I donât trust you.
